The Rising Cost of Perfectionism

It started with the Barbies on the floor. Perfect outfits, perfect shoes, perfect smile, perfect house. Some long lost day down there, I married perfection and she has been running the show ever since.

In this episode I pull back the curtain on what I am actually seeing and experiencing. Through the lens of low key anxiety, the kind that just buzzes in the background, I share the tools I practice and how I am working to transcend my “perfectionism”. I also introduce the work of Richard Schwartz and internal family systems theory, which posits that the psyche is made up of an internal family of parts that interact like a real family, often leading to conflict. His book, No Bad Parts, is a great place to start if you want to explore this work on your own.

Then there is this other part of me, the girl raised on Disney Princess Magic. I am Belle in the library with a magic book type of girl. Jasmine and her tiger kind of magic. And then Bewitched showed up and said wiggle your nose and magic appears. Was she trying to program us to be perfect or was it a secret door into a realm where we actually have that kind power?

I want to find out. So I am running a magical experiment on myself. Instead of giving these anxious perfectionist thoughts the microphone all of the time, I am going to affirm how healthy I feel and do this thought spell on myself every single day for 40 days. I am healthy, I am strong, and I have all the energy that I need.

The collective power is always more powerful than just the individual. So I am inviting you to come along. Make your own wish. Affirm something that you need to believe about yourself right now. And let Lizzy know what your affirmation is for the challenge. Tag us on Instagram or leave us a voicemail on our hotline and we will be here using our energy to help you create your magic.

Because really, what do we have to lose by trying?
